Significant tree register

Bayside is renowned and loved for its leafy outlook, tree lined streets and lush private gardens.

To preserve this character for future generations, residents can nominate a special example to be included on our Significant Tree Register.

The Significant Tree Management Policy outlines how trees are nominated, listed and removed from this register. The policy does not restrict the owner of a significant tree from maintaining it however removal from this register must be endorsed by Council.

Protecting large, significant trees across the Bayside municipality is one of the actions of the Urban Forest Strategy

What is a significant tree?

Some trees, through age, size, and rarity of planting or association with historical events achieve a higher level of importance on private or public land.

Trees meeting the criteria outlined below can be put forward for inclusion on Council’s Significant Tree Register by Council resolution.

If a tree or other vegetation is listed on the Significant Tree Register, a Local Law permit is required to destroy, damage, remove, cut, trim, lop, prune the tree/vegetation.

Future plans to further protect significant trees

Introducing further protections for significant trees is an action of the Bayside Urban Forest Strategy. This includes the introduction of a new planning overlay to include trees on the Significant Tree Register into the Bayside Planning Scheme

This will mean that a Planning Permit will be required for the proposed removal of any tree on the register, and for building works proposed within the Tree Protection Zone of a Significant tree.
