Builder appointed for Tulip Street basketball stadium

We’ll soon be turning the sod on the new basketball stadium to be built adjacent to the Sandringham Leisure Centre.

Works will commence in late November/early December 2021 and we expect to see more players passing and shooting their way to glory when the courts open in late 2022. Council is partnering with Sandringham Basketball Association, who will contribute $3 million to deliver the new facilities.

Officers worked closely with local wildlife and environmental groups to design and appropriately locate the courts to protect more trees and create a safe corridor to the nearby Tulip Street Pond for frogs and other wildlife.

The project includes:

• a four indoor court extension

• change rooms with individual showers and toilets

• storage, reception, canteen and first aid room

• air circulation system throughout stadium

• 80,000 litre water tank

• 80kw solar energy system

• additional car parking.

All facilities and businesses at Sandringham Leisure Centre will remain open during the construction with play continuing on the existing basketball courts.

The Lloyd Group Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to build the new facilities because of their understanding of the environmental requirements of the works; value for money; and demonstrated experience with projects of this scale.
