New look for Brighton Recreational Centre

Works on the rebuild of Brighton Rec set to begin

The existing Brighton Recreational Centre located in Outer Crescent Brighton has served the Bayside community since 1968 and needs to be replaced to meet the community’s diverse needs, while ensuring it remains accessible and affordable for all users.

The redevelopment will transform Brighton Recreational Centre into an integrated multi-purpose precinct for activities, educational classes, sports, childcare and more.
The centre has been closed since August 2021 due to a fire that caused irreversible damage. Council has been fast-tracking the planning for the redevelopment to minimise impact to centre users and surrounding residents.

We are now getting ready to begin the rebuild, with site preparation and demolition works underway.

The upgrades follow an extensive community consultation process undertaken by Council to gain a better understanding of how the centre is utilised and identify areas for improvement.

Feedback demonstrated how important the centre is for the diverse range of activities, programs, and social connections it provides for all ages and abilities.

The community’s vision has helped shape the design to ensure the new facility meets the diverse user needs while remaining accessible and functional.

Some of the key features will include:

  • An extended gymnastics area with first floor viewing space
  • Childcare facilities
  • Dedicated pottery and art rooms
  • Multi-function spaces
  • Adult change facility
  • Extensive solar installation with on-site battery storage
  • Additional car parking
  • Landscaping improvements providing connectivity to Wilson Recreation Reserve; and
  • Public toilet servicing users of Wilson Recreation Reserve.

We anticipate the new and improved Brighton Recreational Centre will be ready for the community to enjoy in June 2023.
