We’ve created better facilities for our diverse community needs

The original Brighton Recreational Centre (BRC) served the Brighton community since 1968.

Following a fire that caused irreparable damage to the building, BRC was closed with planning for the redevelopment accelerated to minimise impact to centre users and surrounding residents.

In 2018, the Council completed a social infrastructure needs assessment. The assessment found the Centre serviced more than 2,000 people per week, and determined the building was ageing and lacked storage and contemporary design features.

In 2020, Council commenced a community engagement process to gain a better understanding of how the centre was utilised and to identify areas for improvement.

Feedback collected demonstrated that BRC is an important community asset that is highly valued for the diverse range of activities/ programs and social connections it provides for all ages and abilities. This feedback resulted in Council resolving to redevelop the site and provide facilities that meet current standards and improve customer experience at the site.

The community’s vision has helped shape the new design to ensure the new facility meets the diverse user needs while remaining accessible and functional.

The redevelopment transformed the centre into an outstanding integrated multi-purpose precinct for activities, educational classes, sports, childcare and more.

Project funding

Council invested $9 million in the renewal.  

Timing

At the 5 April 2022, Special Meeting of Council, SJ Higgins Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to construct BRC. After site establishment, demolition works commenced June 2022. Construction was completed late 2023.
