Councillor Michael Heffernan first served as Councillor with Bayside City Council from 2000 to 2003, before being re-elected in October 2012. A Bayside resident for almost 30 years, Cr Heffernan is married to Inge and has two adult children. Cr Heffernan has extensive financial experience and is a sharebroker and economist with Phillip Capital Sharebrokers. He has also worked as an economist with the Commonwealth Government, and as Chief Economist/Lawyer with the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2013 and again in 2016 Cr Heffernan was awarded Stock Picker of the year by the Australian Stockbrokers Foundation.
Cr Heffernan is a well-respected and frequently quoted media commentator on market and economic events. He has also been heavily involved with the educational side of the finance industry in his role as part-time lecturer for Kaplan’s Graduate Diploma courses (formerly Securities Institute of Australia, and FINSIA).
Cr Heffernan demonstrates a strong commitment to the community through his 35-plus years’ service as a volunteer solicitor with Bayside Legal Aid, and until recently, an honorary Director at Sandy Beach Community Centre and a member of the Monash Heart Strategic Advisory Board. In addition, Cr Heffernan speaks on the share market and economy to various community groups on a no-fee basis.
