It all starts with respect

Grants of up to $1000 are now available to community organisations, clubs and groups for initiatives that support awareness raising projects during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

The new Council grants program aims to encourage community groups to raise awareness of the prevalence of violence against women in our community and build skills to increase respect for women and call out disrespect.

In Bayside 761 incidents of family violence have been reported in the past year. In most incidents, a current or former partner was involved.

The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence is an international campaign that runs from   25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, World Human Rights Day.   Violence against women is one of the world’s most persistent violations of human rights. During the 16 Days of Activism, people around the world will unite to raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women for good.

This year in Victoria, 16 Days of Activism will be focusing on the notion of “Respect Women: Call It Out …”, asking everyday Victorians to consider what violence against women may look like, and to call out instances where they recognise gender-based violence or its precursors, such as verbally abusing women in public.

The 16 Days of Activism Grant should be used to raise awareness of the prevalence of violence against women and to increase respect for women. You could, for example, use it to host an event to promote the campaign, for community programs such as arts and cultural activities or for training sessions for staff or volunteers. Sports clubs are encouraged to apply for projects which promote healthier masculinities.

Applications are assessed on a first come-first served basis. The 16 Days of Activism Grants are available until the fund runs out. Initiatives must be implemented within the 16 Days of Activism campaign (25 November – 10 December 2021).
