It’s time to end homelessness

As living costs continue to rise, homelessness and insecure housing have become a growing concern locally.

We recognise the severity of this issue and support Homelessness Australia’s campaign to raise greater awareness during Homelessness Week from 7 to 13 August 2023.

The complex issues of homelessness and insecure housing don’t have borders. Whether you’re personally affected or would like to help someone else in the community who may be at risk, this week offers an opportunity to make a difference.

On any given night, 122,500 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness. Homelessness can be caused by numerous factors, including family violence, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, family breakdowns, mental illness, and substance abuse. It can happen to anyone.

Over 2,900 households in Bayside are dealing with housing stress, and almost 1,000 need affordable housing. Council’s dedicated Community Care Team offers outreach services, advocacy, and practical support for those who are sleeping rough or at risk of homelessness.

We also have strong working partnerships with support agencies such as BayCISS, Monash Health, Launch Housing, Victoria Police and Community Connections to ensure that no one struggles alone.

Our website offers a comprehensive directory of local community services to support residents, including ‘Ask Izzy’ which provides free and anonymous aid with housing, meals, healthcare and more. BayCISS in Hampton and Launch Housing in Cheltenham - Victoria’s largest housing and homeless support provider – also offer help to those in need.
