Bay Trail Duplication Sandown Street to Royal Brighton Yacht Club

Smoother for cyclists, better for pedestrians. Bayside City Council is proud to enhance our 17km stretch of bay trail, delivering a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists along Port Phillip Bay.

Key improvements

  • Building a new dedicated cycle path between Royal Brighton Yacht Club to Sandown Street

  • Restoring the existing timber seawall to protect the new path from tide and wave erosion
  • Upgrading the existing streetscape including removal and/or replacement of bollards, concrete pavement and line marking.

Upcoming construction works

  • A construction site compound will be established on the western end of Sandown Street, Brighton
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained from Sandown Street to Brighton Beach
  • Access for shared trail will be maintained throughout works, with a temporary non-frequent equipment crossing operational for a few minutes during off-peak periods
  • A small number of parking spaces will be occupied by construction vehicles during material deliveries at Middle Brighton Baths and in Sandown Street.
  • Cyclists travelling through existing shared trail are required to dismount for the safety of path users and construction workers
  • Contractors will be following COVID Safe plan consistent with Chief Health Officer guidelines
  • Temporary fencing and signage will be installed during the works for the safety of the community

Works will commence in mid-October 2021 and take approximately 8 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

The Bay Trail between the Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Sandown Street (the existing shared use bridge) has been identified as a high risk site for accidents given the high volume of pedestrians and cyclists that use this section.

Council consulted widely on the proposal to establish a separated pedestrian and bicycle paths along this section of the Bay Trail by installing a three metre wide at-grade bicycle path on the foreshore above the high water mark.

This will provide a connection from the existing bicycle path at Sandown Street and facilitate the full separation of pedestrians and cyclists at this location.

The purpose is to prevent hazards and make this section of the shared path more enjoyable for users.

Council has worked with residents to ensure that the proposed design solution for this site was in line with community expectations. In 2020, we explored an option to build a 1.1 metre concrete wall to support the construction of the shared path based on advice from coastal engineering experts.

As a result of local feedback, we have updated the plans to ensure that these upgrades help to improve the safety of users whilst balancing the impact on the amenity of nearby residents.

The updated design involves restoration of an existing timber seawall in the sea that will not be prominent from the shoreline. This is to protect the new path from tide and wave erosion, reducing the frequency of sand washing onto the existing and new bicycle path.
