Placemaking on Small Street

Artist impression of the Small Street placemaking project, timber decking and seating, planter boxes and trees, and stencilled artwork on the footpath

We’re creating a new place for shoppers, commuters, and locals to enjoy within the busy Hampton Street shopping and dining precinct.

The Small Street, Hampton placemaking initiative will turn a dead end into a destination, with accessible timber decking, outdoor seating, planter boxes and vibrant painted stencilled footpaths. Planter boxes will provide greenery and the potential to incorporate an edible garden in the future.

This project at the eastern (train line) end of Small Street complements the existing bronze sculpture trail, mosaics, and community stories reflecting on the history of the area engraved into the footpath along Hampton St, with a design honouring Bayside’s mid-nineteenth-century market gardens.

Key features

Painted in sepia tones, the new community space creates an interesting pocket of difference amid Hampton’s bustling commercial district. The installation continues the stories and compliments Bayside's Sculpture Trail and includes:

  • Planter boxes (and potentially an edible garden)
  • Accessible timber deck and bespoke seating
  • Stencilled footpath art designed to convey a story and unify the installation

Timing

Commencing Thursday, 17 August 2023, works will take up to one month to complete, weather permitting between 7.30am to 4pm.

What to expect during works

A low level of interruption is anticipated during the placemaking installation. Bollards and barrier tape will indicate areas not accessible to the community during works.

Project cost

The placemaking installation aligns with Goal 3 in the Council Plan 2021-2025 and Theme 4 in the Bayside 2050 Community Vision. The project’s estimated cost is $35,000.
