100th birthday for Black Rock tree
The centenary of the magnificent Sydney Red Gum tree was cause for celebration 🌳🎉
Residents and tree lovers alike gathered in Black Rock on Sunday to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of Bayside's most historic trees.
Located at 15-25 Cheltenham Road, the Sydney Red Gum tree - Latin name angophora costata - was planted in 1923 by a director of the Semco Art Needlework.
Semco were an important business in the Bayside area for much of the 20th century, employing many locals and implementing several progressive initiatives.
Bayside Councillor Laurence Evans OAM, whose auntie worked for Semco when they relocated to Sandringham, spoke at the birthday celebration.
“Nature is such an important part of this community, and I’m proud that we prioritise the health and longevity of magnificent environmental sites,” Cr Evans said.
“This wonderful tree is a reminder that we, as a community, can leave a positive mark that future generations can enjoy for years to come.”
The celebrations included an historic photographic exhibition, along with birthday cake and balloons.
