Advocating for our community on level crossing removals

Council is calling on the Victorian Government to consult the community on plans to remove the Highett and Wickham Road level crossings to ensure the best possible outcome for local residents, traders and the broader community.

The removal of the crossings is one of Bayside’s advocacy priorities and we warmly welcome the Premier’s announcement that it will go ahead.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Hanna El Mouallem said that seeking the views of the community on the type of crossing and replacement station precinct and strong integration with the nearby Suburban Rail Loop station was essential.

“Bayside strongly supports the removal of the crossings and we urge the state government to ensure any plans maximise the benefits and minimise any impacts for the Highett community,” he said.

“This includes consideration of a tunnelled solution to the rail line and crossing due to the proximity of the Suburban Rail Loop tunnelling works and enhanced urban design, integrated transport and open space outcomes for our community”.

Bayside is also seeking for the level crossing removal project to be managed to minimise the impact on community facilities and services and ensure continued access during and post construction.

Council will write to the Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport Infrastructure and seek a briefing from the Level Crossing Removal Project on these matters. We will also continue to work with our Kingston neighbours to achieve great outcomes for our community.
