Clean Up Australia Day 2024

Showing up to make Bayside cleaner, greener place for everyone 💚

Clean Up Australia Day 2024 in Bayside was a huge success. We had heaps of volunteers who participated in the event and collected a massive amount of litter. It was wonderful to see over 90 people from all around Bayside, including the dedicated Hampton Beach Patrol, first-timers, and our Mayor, Cr Fiona Stitfold all rolling up their sleeves to join in on the clean-up to help keep Bayside beautiful.

A big shout out to Cleanaway, our waste collection contractor, who brought along one of their new trucks for everyone to check out. It was a hit with both the kids and adults, sparking lots of interesting chats about how we can manage our waste better. Also, a huge thank you to Cleanaway for helping dispose of the litter after the event.

The variety of “stuff” that was found was eye-opening – from the usual suspects like plastic bottles, cans, and straws to the more quirky finds like an alarm clock, a Christmas tree, and even a rubber duckie!

These items were all found within a 3km stretch around Green Point foreshore and surrounding areas. It's a reminder of the impact our throwaway culture has on the places we love and the wildlife that calls them home.

The litter found on the day is an important reminder that we need to take action to reduce our littering habits and start taking responsibility for our environment. Before we even get to the point of disposing of items, it's key to remember the importance of avoiding waste in the first place. Using reusable options, like keep cups for our beverages, cloth bags for our shopping, and refillable water bottles, can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated. By making these choices, we're not just preventing litter but also cutting down on our overall environmental impact. We can then keep up our efforts by properly disposing of items we can't avoid, making sure we recycle as much as possible so that these materials don't end up in landfills or oceans where they can harm wildlife and nature. Let's all do our bit in keeping our planet clean.

A massive thank you to the team at 3188 Hampton Beach for partnering with us and making the day such a success. Their ongoing efforts in organising clean-ups are making a real difference in our community.
