How to dispose of e-waste and dangerous items

Do you know that electronic waste (e-waste) in your general rubbish bin can combust and cause flamin' rubbish?

As of 1 July 2019, under Victorian Government legislation, ewaste is banned from landfill. Instead, please bring your e-waste to Council locations rather than including in your kerbside bins.

E-waste is any item with a battery, cord, or plug that is no longer working or wanted and has the potential to cause fire damage if not disposed of correctly.

These items may contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury, harmful to both human health and the environment. They also contain valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper, which can be recovered and reused. Rather than sitting in landfill, your e-waste can be remade into something new.

Other flammable items such as aerosol cans which are not empty and household chemicals are also dangerous to place in kerbside bins.

Examples of e-waste and dangerous items

  • Mobile phones
  • Laptop, tablets, and computers
  • Mouses and keyboards
  • Cameras
  • Printers
  • Cords, and mobile or computer accessories
  • Televisions
  • DVD players
  • CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks
  • Power tools
  • Small kitchen appliances (toasters, kettles)
  • White goods (fridges, washers/dryers, dishwashers)
  • Batteries of any type

Examples of other flammable items

  • Aerosol cans that are not empty
  • Household chemicals
  • Accelerants e.g. petrol, diesel and waste oils
  • Gas bottles or butane cans
  • Hot coals or lit cigarettes.

Where can I take my e-waste?

Small e-waste items such as batteries, old phones, light bulbs and cords can be disposed for free by taking them to any one of Bayside’s community recycling stations.

Locations:

  • Corporate Centre – 76 Royal Avenue, Sandringham
  • Beaumaris Library – 96 Reserve Rd, Beaumaris
  • Brighton Library – 14 Wilson St, Brighton
  • Sandringham Library - 8 Waltham Street, Sandringham

The above items and larger e-waste items can be taken to the Bayside Waste and Recycling Centre, 144 Talinga Road, Cheltenham 3192.

You can also book a hard waste collection for your larger items such as white goods and TVs.

Chemical disposal

Highly toxic items, such as chemicals, should never be put in your rubbish bins, poured down the drain, or left out on the nature strip during hard rubbish collections.

You can drop off unwanted household chemicals at our free Detox Your Home events, which are licensed to accept toxic chemicals and staffed by trained specialist chemists.

Too hot to handle 🔥

There have been two fires inside our waste trucks over the past week.

These fires are caused by the incorrect disposal of dangerous items inside kerbside bins. Electronic waste (e-waste), batteries, flammable items or chemicals are banned from landfill and must be disposed of correctly.

Before and after shots of a waste truck fire and the clean road.
