A nestbox to call home

We're extending our network of nest boxes and log hollows that provide vital refuge for native birds and mammals within Bayside.

Nest boxes and natural hollows play an essential role in providing safe spaces for our native birds and mammals to nest and breed.

Ecological consultants inspected a sample of 48 of 73 nest boxes in Bayside trees, with 31% of nest boxes assessed found to occupy native animals.

We will partner with local environmental volunteers to extend the nest box program by identifying species we want to attract to Bayside, creating guidelines for safely constructing and installing nest boxes and log hollows, and establishing an ongoing monitoring program.

Some of the species which occupy the habitats include the Australian Wood Duck, Rainbow Lorikeet, Brush-tailed Possum, Common Ringtail Possum and Laughing Kookaburra, the last of which is rare to find in urban Melbourne.

Our commitment to the expansion of nest boxes and log hollows is in line with goals stated in our Council Plan 2021-25 and the principles outlined in the Bayside Biodiversity Action Plan 2018-2027.
