Success in City Nature Challenge 2023

Bayside has contributed to Greater Melbourne finishing 20th in the worldwide City Nature Challenge 2023!

Cities from around the world competed in an event from 28 April to 1 May that encouraged people to investigate their local environment.

People were asked to take photos or sound recordings of local plants and animals using the iNaturalist app and showcase their unique biodiversity to the rest of the world.

At the end of the competition, Greater Melbourne finished 20th out of 482 cities, improving from a 33rd-placed finish in 2022. The categories were ranked by the number of observations, species and observers.

The City Nature Challenge and the iNaturlist app plays an important role in contributing to scientific research and motivates communities to experience their local environment.

There has been continuous growth in the City Nature Challenge from year to year, and we encourage you to put Bayside on the map in 2024.

In the meantime, look out for other iNaturalist projects, challenges and competitions you can be a part of in Bayside.
