Upcoming weekday closure of Dendy Street Beach

Dendy Street Beach will close on weekdays from 16 May to mid-June 2022 to help renourish the beach and combat erosion.

The renourishment works are in response to recent storm events that have caused significant sand movement.

Council has sought expert guidance from coastal engineers and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on these works.

Works will involve moving large quantities of sand from the Park Street Groyne to the south end of the beach. This will increase the beach width and provide a buffer from further storm damage impacting the bathing boxes, important remanent Indigenous vegetation, precious dune system and cultural sites at Dendy Street Beach.

We are continuing to investigate a longer term solution to prevent further damage caused by waves and wind, with implementation anticipated to be in 2025 – 2027.

Timing and access

The works will commence on 16 May 2022 until mid-June 2022 from the Park Street Groyne to Gould Street.  Fencing and barriers will be installed to limit public access into the construction site during the week.

The beach will reopen on weekends where members of the public can again access the bathing boxes, Life Saving Club facilities and foreshore area.

Public access to the Kinane Street public toilet will be available from the shared path only.

While construction is in progress, we request that you observe signage to ensure your safety.
