Bayside in summer

Summer is a time of holidays and family fun, but it can also be a season of weather extremes so preparing makes sense.

Stay informed by using the VicEmergency app, check local restrictions before you travel and follow Council’s social media accounts to stay up to date.

Be water smart

Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Half Moon Bay, Black Rock and Beaumaris beaches are patrolled between the red and yellow flags by volunteer lifesavers during summer.

Summer storms can contaminate the water at our beaches and make it unsafe to swim in the open water.
Check the EPA’s Beach Report before you set out for that swim.

If swimming at home, ensure safety barriers and fences are in perfect working order. All pools and spas
should be registered with Council.

Stay cool

Heat kills more Australians each year than any natural disaster. Those most at risk are older people, young children and people with a medical condition.

Survive the heat and look out for the elderly with these simple tips:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Never leave anyone or pets in a car
  • Park in the shade
  • Plan ahead
  • Check in on others.

Wildlife

If you come across a snake, leave it alone. If it bites you, stay calm, call triple (000), apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the wound and remain still until the ambulance arrives.

Do not wash, suck, cut or tourniquet the bite area. Remember, stingrays like to hang out in the bay too. If you are stung, seek medical attention.

Fire season

Keep an eye on the fire danger warning and adhere to all rules.

If you are holidaying in a bushfire-prone area, prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan.

Shared paths

When using our shared paths, be considerate of other path users.

Cyclists must give way to pedestrians and ride at an appropriate speed. Pedestrians should keep to the left and be mindful of other users when walking in a group.

Be prepared

The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) has some fantastic tools to help you prepare for emergency events.
