Celebrating contemporary Australian art

Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize 2022

Feast your eyes on an exceptional array of art as Bayside Gallery brims with an eclectic mix of Australian talent.

The exceptional work of 41 finalists of one of Victoria’s significant annual prizes for painting - the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize 2022 - are on exhibit at the gallery.

The finalist exhibition is a collection of established and emerging artists, displaying a wide range of styles and giving gallery visitors a glimpse of the diversity of contemporary painting in Australia.

Established in 2015, the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize celebrates artistic diversity and energy and gives us a wonderful opportunity to add exceptional works of art to the Bayside City Council Art and Heritage Collection.

Dr David Sequeira, Director, Fiona and Sidney Myer Gallery, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Bala Starr, Director, La Trobe Art Institute and Joanna Bosse, Curator, Bayside Gallery had the difficult task this year of judging the incredible entrants and whittling it down to the worthy finalists.

This year’s overall winner and recipient of the $15,000 acquisitive prize is Alice Wormald for her work Restless interactions (2021).

“The winning painting, Restless interactions (2021), by Alice Wormald inspired deep conversation, and its mysterious nature was intriguing,” Joanna said.

Bayside Mayor Alex del Porto noted “it is a compelling mix of representation, abstraction, naturalism and artifice.”
