The new Elsternwick Park Oval No.1 Pavilion and upgraded Oval were officially opened yesterday, providing outstanding new facilities for community AFL and cricket in Bayside and the broader region.
The $6.4 million redevelopment is the result of Bayside Council partnering with the Victorian Government, Victorian Amateur Football Association, AFL, AFL Victoria and Old Melburnians Football Club.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Laurence Evans said the opening was a significant milestone in Council’s $33 million investment aimed at improving all 27 sporting pavilions in Bayside by 2025.
“We are committed to investing in community sports infrastructure that encourages good health, wellbeing and a more connected community”, he said.
“The accessible and female-friendly facilities will help to maximise participation across all ages, skill levels and genders.”
The new two-storey pavilion was designed by Croxon Ramsay Architects and provides state of the art facilities including unisex change rooms, all abilities access and social spaces with kitchen facilities in a modern, environmentally sensitive design.
The oval has been reconstructed with improved irrigation, drainage and new turf to provide a superior playing experience.
The redevelopment of Oval No. 1 is part of Council’s broader investment in Elsternwick Park North, which recognises the importance of this space for local sports and passive recreation in the community.
Oval No. 2 is currently being revitalised with a new pavilion, improvements to the playing surface and installation of cricket nets and lighting. The former golf course area has been opened for passive recreation and planning for the future of this space is being done in collaboration with Melbourne Water, City of Port Phillip and City of Glen Eira, with community consultation on a new masterplan to come.
