Shane Warne honoured at R G Chisholm Reserve

The sports oval within R G Chisholm Reserve will be named the ‘Shane Warne Oval’ in recognition of the late Shane Warne.

A joint submission from East Sandringham Cricket Club and the East Sandringham Junior Football Club to name the sports oval has been approved.

Warne, who grew up in Black Rock and maintained a connection with the Bayside area throughout his life, played cricket and AFL as a junior at the oval within R G Chisholm Reserve.

President of the Sandringham East Cricket Club, Scott Campbell, said it's fitting to name the sports oval after Shane given it is where his passion for cricket commenced.

Warne became a global sporting icon over an illustrious national and international cricket career, holding several records including Australia’s highest test wicket taker.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Hanna El Mouallem said Warne’s significant contribution to cricket and lifelong connection to the Bayside area makes him a worthy recipient of the honour.

“Shane Warne was born and raised in Bayside and the oval at R G Chisholm Reserve was where he honed the skills that would catapult him into cricketing greatness,” said Cr El Mouallem.

“The naming of this oval in his honour is a fantastic tribute to an Australian sporting icon.”

The naming of the oval in recognition of Warne has been supported wholeheartedly by the Warne family.
